About the Deity

About the Temple

In the olden times, the rulers of Jaipur were believed to be spiritually inclined and had followed various religious rituals with utmost austerity and devotion. Holy Hindu scriptures including the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra were chanted regularly across their kingdom. The Maha Mrithyunjaya mantra is a powerful sloka chanted to avert calamities and death. Apparently, Lord Shiva happens to be the divine destroyer whose blessings are invoked by chanting the Mrithyunjay Mantra. Therefore this temple for Lord Shiva was consecrated on the fourteenth day of the Shukla Paksha (bright phase of the moon) in the Vaishaka month of the Samvat year 1851.

The temple's architecture complements the architectural style of the Jaipur city. The temple has a huge palace like entrance gates with an elevated plinth over the shrine. A small chowk (market) is also seen near the temple complex. Followers of Shri Vallabha sect (pertaining to Sri Vaishnavism) and Adhvaitha philosophy visit this holy shrine to seek the blessings of the Lord.

Rare Fact

Lord Shiva graces in his Linga form from most Shiva temples across the country, whereas a Vigraha of the Lord is enshrined here, in addition to his Shiva Linga. The vigraha of Goddess Durga Devi here appears sitting on a tiger.

Sri Maha Shivaratri and the Patotsava are the prominent festivals celebrated in this temple.
