Osiyan Mata Temple (Shri Sachchiyay Mataji)

Overview

Osiyan Mata Temple is a Hindu shrine situated in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, India. This temple is primarily dedicated to Goddess Durga.

About the Deity

Goddess Durga Devi graces here as Mahishasura Mardini (the killer of Demon Mahisha) and is known by the name Sachchidhaya. The goddess appears having ashtabhuja (eight arms) and is seated on a lion. Demon Mahisha's face is seen near the goddess's feet.

According to legends, demon Mahishasura had misused the powers that he acquired as a result of his Tapas (penence) to torment the beings of all the three worlds (earth, heaven and underworld). Unable to tolerate his atrocities anymore, the Gods sought the help of Goddess Durga Devi to save them from Mahisha's clutches. Hence goddess Maa Shakthi fought the evil Mahishasura and annihilated him, thereby establishing dharma once again in this world.
