Osiyan Mata Temple is a Hindu shrine situated in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, India. This temple is primarily dedicated to Goddess Durga.
About the Deity
Goddess Durga Devi graces here as Mahishasura Mardini (the killer of Demon Mahisha) and is known by the name Sachchidhaya. The goddess appears having ashtabhuja (eight arms) and is seated on a lion. Demon Mahisha's face is seen near the goddess's feet.
According to legends, demon Mahishasura had misused the powers that he acquired as a result of his Tapas (penence) to torment the beings of all the three worlds (earth, heaven and underworld). Unable to tolerate his atrocities anymore, the Gods sought the help of Goddess Durga Devi to save them from Mahisha's clutches. Hence goddess Maa Shakthi fought the evil Mahishasura and annihilated him, thereby establishing dharma once again in this world.
About the Temple
Sri Sachchiyay Temple was consecrated on the 10th day of Shukla paksha, falling in the month of Chitra, in the Samvat year 1234 (1177 A.D) according to the traditional Hindu Calendar.
The architecture of this temple resembles the Nagar style. The temple has a sanctum sanctorum and a Sabha Mandap (prayer portico). The lower parts of the walls carry elegant designs. The entrance to the temple is nine bracketed, thus adding to the temple's graceful look.
Goddess Sachchiyay is said to be the clan goddess of Parmer Rajputs who were ardent devotees of this deity. Apparently, eighteen clans of Parmer Rajputs are believed to have got converted into Jainism and were later known by as Oswals. Therefore, this goddess is held in high esteem by both Oswal Jains as well as the Hindu Rajputs.
The nine day long Navaratras falling in the Hindu months of Chaitra and Ashwin assumes greater significance in this temple with special poojas being held commemorating the occasions. Thousands of visitor flock to the temple to get a darshan of the Devi and to seek her divine blessings.
