Overview
The deity of God Shiva is worshipped at the Neelakanteswara Temple located in Channapatna at Karnataka. The temple was constructed in the 18th century and comprises of two Ardhamantapas, a Navaranga and a Garbhagriha. The Navranga is constructed in a rectangular shape and has four engraved pillars in the center of it. The pillars in Mukhamantapa and outer Mantapa are engraved in the form of Mysore style of architecture. According to the local stories, the temple was constructed by Jagadevaraya who was a feudatory at Channapatna.
About the deity
The temple enshrines a tall and antique Neelakantaha Linga. A deity of Nandi is also enshrined at the spacious Mukhamanpata which is known to be brought from the taluk’s office.
About The Temple
The pillars are engraved with extraordinary sculptures of the episodes of Shaiva Purana and images of devotees. The Navaranga’s entrance consists of two cells; one has a marble deity of Adi Shankaracharya and the other one contains an image of Narayanaswami. A Linga with seven headed Naga is also enshrined in the Navaranga. A separate shrine for Goddess Prasanna Parvati is also built on the left of the Central Garbhagriha. In front of the temple, a gateway and a tower is built which dates back to 1970.
Festival
The festival of Mahashivatri is celebrated with great joy in the temple and special poojas are conducted in Karthika. Thousands of devotees from all over the world take part in the holy prayers.
