Nagammal Temple

Overview

Nagammal Temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti located in Palamedu, Gengamuthur, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, India.

Legend and Stories

Of the 108 incarnations of Mother Parvathi, Nagammal is one to establish Dharma, according to scriptures.

Kathru, wife of Sage Kashyapa delivered Adisesha and other species of snakes. Vinatha delivered Garuda, the eagle vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Garuda and the snakes were always quarrelling. Unable to bear the onslaught of Garuda, the snakes asked him to accept them as ornaments and end the enmity between them. Garuda obliged. The snakes then went to the world below the earth called Pathala Loka.

From here, they became the bed for Lord Vishnu, ornament for Lord Shiva and umbrella for Mother Karumariamman. The incarnation of Nagammal is said to represent the theory of Sage Patanjali that God could be worshipped in any form.

According to stories attached to this place, Sri Nagammal was in an anthill surrounded by fertile coconut trees which in due course took the form Sri Karumari Amman under a neem tree. This power was washed away in floods and became Nagammal and chose this place for landing finally. She also had with Her Karumari, Peria Nagammal and Rakkayee. This amalgamated form is known as Nagammal.
