Overview


Morjhim is a beautiful village that lies in the Pernem district in north Goa. The main occupation here is fishing and farming. However other activities such as toddy tapping, fenny distilling, basket weaving and coir making are also carried out. People in Morjhim celebrate festivals of Sangodd, Sao Joao and St Roque.


About the Temple


The Sri Morjai temple is situated in Morjhim amidst natural surroundings. This ancient historical temple is dedicated to Goddess, Sri Morjai. She is known to be one of the seven sisters who came and resided in different parts of Goa along with their brother, Sri Khetoba. Morjai temple at Morjhim possesses a beautiful look as the temple walls are decorated with rare and extinct 'Kaavi' art friezes. The original 'Mukhmandap' (hall) and its window grills also have various geometric and floral patterns which are depicted with 'Kaavi' art. The exterior 'Sabhamandap' (outer hall) dates to 1936 and has rectangular columns supporting a balcony.


Festivals


The main festival celebrated at the Sri Morjai temple is 'Kalaas Utsav' which is celebrated once in every three, five, seven or nine years and lasts for nearly a month. The festival begins from the 'Phalgun Shudda Panchami' and concludes with a big religious and cultural gathering in which people from nearby places gather in large numbers.
