Maruthi Temple

Overview


The Maruti temple is situated on top of the Altinho hillock overlooking the Fontain has district in Panaji, the capital of Goa. It is dedicated to lord Hanuman, the monkey god and enshrines Lord Hanuman as the presiding deity.


About the Temple


The Maruthi Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Panjim, It is said that the idol of Maruthi in the main temple can be seen even from the main road, through an opening in the basement wall of the temple. One can see the beautiful octagonal Deepastambha or Lamp Tower at this Temple. Shri Maruti Sansthan is an example of beautiful architecture, bright orange structure against a green backdrop, and wide steps that begin from the foothill in Mala where an ancient natural fresh water spring, once a lifeline of the area still quenches the thirst of the locals. This spring has three tanks where water collects from the mountain before flowing into a reservoir. Lord Hanuman is a Hindu deity who is an ardent devotee of Rama, a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana. A general among the vanaras, Hanuman is an incarnation of the divine and a follower of Lord Rama in the struggle against the demon king Ravana. Temple was built around 1934.


Festivals


The major festival is the 10 day long annual festival celebrated at this temple in the month of February. This temple attracts huge number of devotees on this special occasion.


Accessibility


Goa’s airport, Dabolim, is 29 km south of Panaji and has chartered flights come in from Europe and from major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Thiruvanthapuram and Kochi. The train station is at Margao some 39 kms away. From the station it is possible to hire taxi to take you to Panaji. The Kadamba Bus Terminal in Pato, 1 km east of the main square, is a busy bus junction with buses coming in from neighbouring Goan towns and long distance buses from Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Meaning -Oh Lord Hanuman who has a mystical form, who adorns a silk garment in yellow and who looks similar to molten gold, let thy be auspiciousness.

Anjana Nandanam Veeram Janaki Soka Naasanam, Kapeesa Maksha Hantharam, Vandhe Lanka Bhayankaram

Meaning -We salute Lanka's horror, Anjana's brave son, who ended Sita's sorrows, the ruler of monkeys and the one who killed Aksha, Ravana's son.
