Legend and Stories

Lord Shiva is portrayed as Santoshaalinganamoorthy. Legend has it that Garudan, Mars and the Gandharvas worshipped in this shrine known as Sookshmapuri. Legend has it that Parvati worshipped Shiva in the form of a Shivalingam made with a handful of earth, and hence the name siru-pidi which gradually changed to Sirukudi. The Shivalingam here is a prithvilingam to whom Abhishekam is not offered. Given the stalapuranam, the image of Santoshaalinganamurthy is of great significance.
