Sree Mahadeva Temple

Overview


The Sree Mahadeva Temple is situated at Chadayamangalam in Kollam District of Kerala. Chadayamangalam is found 44 km north of Thiruvananthapruam and 30 km south of Kottarakkara. The directing divinity of this temple is Lord Shiva. Lord Gananapathy, Nagaraja and Naga Yakshi are the minor gods. Sree Mahadeva Temple has a sacrosanct lake, or Theerthakulam, outside the temple divider. Devotees used to take a plunge in the lake or wash their hands and feet before going into the temple.


Legend and Stories


As per legend, Jadayu was killed by Ravana when the previous attempted to safeguard Goddess Sita from the evil presence ruler Ravana. Where Jadayu was killed came to be known as Jadayumangalam which was later ruined as Chadayamangalam. It is trusted that Jadayu brought a Sivalinga symbol to venerate and Lord Sri Rama sanctified it here. Some trust that Jadayan is the equivalent word of Lord Siva and where Jadayan abides is Jadayamangalam and changed as Chadayamangalam throughout time. The temple is represented by the Travancore Devaswom Board.


Festivals


Ten-day long principle annual festival celebrated here is on Thiruvathira star in the time of Meenam of Malayalam period. A few speacial poojas are performed on this event and the celebration closes with Arattu (divine shower) at Arattukadavu. Arattukadavu is about one kilometer from the temple. Thalapoli, ornamented and designed elephants, chendamelam, pandimelam, mayilattam and other celebration buoys are paraded with the symbol of Lord Mahadeva for sacred showering.

Mahasivarathri is likewise celebrated with unique poojas, social projects and so on. Yearly Pongala Mahotsavam is likewise celebrated here. Several women folks from all edges of the life and from various parts of Kerala gather here to take an interest in the Pongala Mahotsavam. Different events like Sapthaham, Maha Ganapathy Homam and Lasharchana are likewise occurred once in a while.

Amid Makaravilaku Maholsavam, the peta thullal parade joined by chendamelam and celebration buoys will make darsans and take favouring from Sree Mahadeva before continuing to Shri Kunjayappa Temple.

The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (49 Km). The nearest major Railway station is Kollam Junction at a distance of 37 kms from Chadayamangalam. The State Road Transport Corporation's bus services are available from all major cities in Kerala. Private bus services are available to all major towns near to Chadayamanglam.

Meaning -We worship the fragrant Lord Shiva, who has 3 eyes and who cultivates all beings. May He free me from death, for immortality, as even a cucumber is separated from its bond with the vine.
