Overview
Hapamuny, a famous and ancient village, situated in Ghaghara block at about 12 km from the block headquarter on Ghumla - Lohardaga road. Mahaamaya Temple is dedicated to both Mahaamaya (Shakti) and Vishnu.
History of the Temple
Mahaamaya temple that is the identity of this village was constructed by Gajghat Ray, 22nd king of Naga dynasty and the son of Raja Mohan Ray. He ruled between 869 and 905 AD. He handed over the caring of the temple to his Guru Harinath, a Rashtrakuta (Marathi) Brahmin.
Many years later, sometime between 1391 and 1401 A.D., another Naga king, Raja Shivdasa Karn, installed a Deity of Lord Visnu at the Mahaamaya temple, making it forever the heart and soul of Hapamuny. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1445 – 1535 AD) had chosen this way during his visit to Mathura from Jagannath Puri at about 1485 A.D. He visited this place, and undoubtedly took darshan of the presiding Deity, Lord Visnu, at his transcendental abode in Jharkhand.
As reported in the Ranchi Gazetteer, it appears that some of the local tribal destroyed the original temple at Hapamuny during the Kolh rebellion against their enemies, the Diku. A song by Virmu Ram also memorializes this event. History has it that the local citizens were not against the Mahaamaya temple on account of their religion, but rather the destruction of the temple was an unfortunate result of the local fighting. The ruins of this temple still stand today, near the present Mahaamaya Temple.
