Lepakshi Veerabhadra Temple

There have been many pilgrim centers established by Vijaynagar kingdom during its rule in Andhra Pradesh. Lepakshi Veerabhadra temple is one among such temples. It has been built as per architectural style of Vijaynagara. One can see tall towers both at the northern and western side of the temple. Lepakshi Veerabhadra was built by the two brothers Veeranna and Viruppanna in the 16th century. This shrine links to the great epic Ramayana. There is a small story attached to this temple. It is said that Lord Rama visited this temple on his way to Sri Lanka. He saw the big bird Jadaayu, during his visit, with deep injuries and wings cut. He tried to wake the bird by calling it Leypakshi. It was from this bird that Rama learnt about the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana. The bird died immediately after giving this message to Rama and that both Rama and Lakshman performed the final rites to the bird.
