Lalmati Duramari Ganesh Temple

Overview


Lalmati Duramari Ganesh Temple is located in Bongaigaon District and is considered to one of the oldest temples in Assam. The temple lies on the Khagrapar Hill near Abhayapuri.

Lalmati-Duramari Ganesh Temple is considered as one of the oldest temples of Assam and is situated near Abhayapuri town. This temple has an idol of Lord Ganesha and other gods like Lord Jagannath and Lord Mahadev.Historical and Antiquarian Department of Assam discovered the remains of this temple, following which an excavation work was undertaken. After a study, archaeologists concluded that the carvings, images and idols of the temple belonged to 8th the 10th centuries AD. Historically, there are various reasons for the destruction of this temple and one of them is earthquake. It is also believed that some Burmese invaders destroyed the images and idols of the temple.

Meaning -We meditate on the great power, we call upon the single tusked Ganesh, who grants wishes.
