Kothandaramar Temple

Overview


The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Rama as "Pattabhirama". Sita as Piratti is the consort. The temple is situated close to the Mambalam railway station and is more than 150 years old. The festival Vaikunta Ekadasi is celebrated with fanfare.


About The Temple


Devotees have to reach the main sanctum by passing through a spacious, pillared mandabam. This is where various deities like Yoga Narasimma, Lord Ranganathan, Vishvakasena, and the Alwars like Namalwar, Kulasekara Alwar, Tirumangai Alwar and the Srivaishnava Acharyas like Ramanuja and Manavala Mamuni are placed. Sanctums for Goddess Lakshmi, worshipped here as Ranganayaki Thayar, Andal and Anjaneya lifting the Sanjevi Hill are also available. Pillars of this mandabam contain beautiful sculptures of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. There seen is a separate sanctum for Sri Anjaneya. The vimana above the main shrine is adorned with exquisite stucco images of Ranganthan, Kalinga Narthana Krishnan, Sudarsanan and many others.
The large tank situated adjacent to the temple is called Hanumanth Thirtham. Sri Kothandarama swami temple is situated on Kothandaramar Street, which can be reached turning left off the Madley road subway. It is located near the Ahobila Mutt Oriental School.


About The Deity


The principal sanctum, above which is the Ashtanga Vimana, enshrines the stately image of Sri Rama also known as Pattabhirama, which is facing east. He is seen in a standing pose, holding His bow and arrows, with Sita and Lakshman to His right and left, respectively.


Legend and Stories


According to legend, this place is also called Dakshin Bhadrachalam meaning Bhadrachalam of the South. This temple is believed to have been constructed by a descendent of Bhadrachala Ramadas named Venkatavarada Dasar.


Festivals


In Chithirai month, the ten day Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated, with the chariot (radham) festival on the seventh day. In Vaikasi month, the Vasanthotsavam is held. Sri Yoga Narasimma Garuda Seva Utsav is the important function in Aani month. In Aadi month, Gajendra Moksham , Sri Ranganatha Garuda Seva Utsav and Thiruvadipuram are the important festivals. Sri Krishna Jayanthi is celebrated in Avani month. Pavithrotsavam and Navarathiri are the special functions of Purattasi month. Deepavali is celebrated in Aippasi month, Thirukarthigai Deepam in Karthigai month. In Margazhi month, Thiruppavai Utsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi and Hanumanth Jayanthi are celebrated. In Thai month, Sri Andal Thirukalyana Utsav, in Masi month, Masi Magam and Sri Ramar Garuda Seva Utsav, in Panguni monht, Sri Rama Navami, Panguni Uthram and Sri Thayar Thirukalyana Utsav are the special festivals.

Meaning -According to this sloka, the entire world doesn't recognize the eternal God beyond them, because they are consumed by the elements of satva, rajas and tamas (good, obssessive and dark).

Meaning -According to this sloka, the heavenly maya of God is very complicated, but those who worship God will be able to overcome it.
