Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple

Overview


The Kalyanasundareswarar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Thiruvelvikudi in the Kuthalam taluk of Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to Shiva. This is the 77th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 23rd sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.


About the Temple


The temple is facing east. Lingodbhavar, Chandrasekhara and Ardhanaareeswarar ( different from others – parvathy on the right side – right paathi) adorn the outer walls of the main sanctum. The Ardhanari is unique in that the shakthi is depicted on the right half unlike the usual left .In artha mandapam silaroopam for Agathiyar, Natarajar and Pillayar ( Pillayar is doing prayer for God Shiva's Velvi Completion.

Tamil Inscriptions from the period of Sembian Mahadevi and Rajaraja Cholan and 1st Parantaka Cholan have been found in this temple. There are the shrines for Sembiyan Mathevi, King Raja Raja Chozha and King Parakrama Chozha. The temple has a nice pond outside and the outer courtyard is well maintained. A yajna is led in the temple on full moon days from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. particularly for those confronting postponements in marriage. About the Deity

Legend/Story

God Shiva is a Swayambumurthy in the temple. The temple is commended by holy people Sambandar and Sundarar in their Thevaram songs.
