About the Temple

Romasa Maharishi was the grandson of God Brahma. He had the sage Agastya as his Guru. According to his Guru's recommendation, Romasa dropped nine blossoms in the stream Tamrabharani and introduced nine Shiva Linga icons in nine spots where those blooms came to. All these nine Shiva Lingas are named as Kailasanathar and every one of them are considered as Nava Kailasham sanctuaries. Cheranmahadevi is the second Nava Kailasham temple. Legend and Stories

When, a sage was doing retribution here, he was helped by his child. The child had once left to the woodland to get some kindling, when he was away a youthful sovereign went to the sage. Looking for profound lesson the sovereign endeavored to awaken the sage from his atonement. The sage was in his custom process and declined to awaken; the furious sovereign took a dead snake and set it around the Sages neck. The Sage's child came back from the backwoods, when he returned he saw the dead snake around the Sage's neck, after enquiring he discovered that it was the ruler who had done such a demonstration. He got furious and came to realize that the ruler did it, he went to the royal residence, and said' Prince' you have done an extremely wicked act by putting a dead snake around my dad's neck. I revile you such that, One day the dead snake will get to be alive and kill you're father' and he exited the royal residence furiously. A couple of days after the fact, the King went to see his horoscopes. The castle cleric said 'you will bite the dust in the venom of a snake'. So he chose to fabricate a chamber were snakes can't come in, the ruler lived there joyfully. Rare Facts

This Temple has a rare association with the Mahabharata; the Prince who had put the dead Snake around the Sage was Janamejaya child of Parakshit.

Special Pujas and Rituals are also marked on the day of Shivrathiri with great dedication and devotion. During all the important religious day and auspicious days are marked with long hours in this temple. The temple's Timing are between 6.00 a. m . and 4. 00 to 9.30 p . m for devotees and pilgrims.
