Overview
Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta is a hill located in the Chamarajnagar district of the state of Karnataka. It is at a height of 1450 m, is extensively wooded and also the highest peak in the Bandipur National Park. The hill lies in the core area of the Bandipur National Park and is frequented by wild life including elephants. A dense fog predominates and covers the hills round the year.
About The Temple
Himavad Gopalaswamy temple is dedicated to Gopalaswamy, which is one of the names of Lord Krishna. The gopuram (tower) of the temple is single-tiered and rests on the compound wall. There are a dhwajastambha (flag-pillar) and a bali-peetam (sacrificial altar) present in the mukha mantaba (inner-porch). Parapet wall of the facade of the mukha mantaba contains the sculpture of Dashavatara (the Ten Avatars of the Hindu God Vishnu) with the centre portion depicting Krishna. There is a shikhara (roof) tower over the garbha griha (sanctum). The sanctum contains an idol of Krishna holding a flute under a tree. He is flanked by his friends and the posture is the left big toe resting on the right one. The lord is flanked by his consorts, Rukmini and Sathyabhama. Several cows and cowherds are featured towards the right side.
Legend and Stories
History
It was built by the Chola King Ballala during 1315. Later, the Wodeyars of Mysore, who were ardent devotees of Lord Krishna displayed keen interest in maintaining it.
Legend
According to legend, sage Agasthya performed intense penance. As a result lord Vishnu blessed this place and promised to reside here. The place used to be called as “Hamsatheertha”, which means the lake of swans in Sanskrit.
