Chausath Yogini Temple

Overview

The Chausath Yogini Temple is located in Khajuraho and is dedicated to the 64 yoginis who are the materialization of the Mother Goddess Shakti. Believed to be a 9th century monument, this temple is in a dilapidated state and the public access is restricted in this area.

About the Temple

The construction of the Chausath Yogini temple can be dated to approximately 885 AD. It is the earliest extant temple at the Chandela capital Khajuraho. The temple has been classified as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Ruins of Yogini temples have also been found at other places in and around the territory formerly ruled by the Chandelas or their feudatories, including Badoh, Bhedaghat Dudahi, Lokhari, Hinglajgarh, Mitaoli, Naresar, and Rikhiyan. This suggests that the cult of the Yoginis was well-established in the Chandela territory. The Chausath Yogini temples are connected to the Kapalika and Kaula sects.

Legend and Stories

Of three of the Yogini cult images of Khajuraho still exists photographs from the year 1955. The sculptures themselves have disappeared. Moreover, it is unclear whether the cult images originate from the same time as the temple itself or possibly afterwards. The three photographs show a Durga as Buffeltoterin (mahisasurmardini) next Mahesvari (feminine aspect of Shiva with trident (trishula) and a Nandi -Bullen as companion animal) and the three-headed Brahmi (female aspect of Brahma with a goose as vahana). The latter two figures also belong to the group of Matrikas; Durga (mahisasurmardini) is often found in the immediate vicinity thereof.
