Chamolanath Temple

Overview


The deity of God Shiva is worshipped at the Gopinath Temple which is located in Gopeshwar Town at Uttarakhand. This is an ancient temple which is constructed in a unique and proficient way. A dome is constructed at the top of the temple along with a 30 square feet sanctum sanctorum which is accessible via 24 doors. Various broken pieces of deities can be easily found in and around the temple which depicts the existence of a number of temples in the ancient era. A trident is also built in the 12th century in the courtyard of the temple and is about 5 meters high. The courtyard was built to facilitate eight different meals to the devotees. There are carvings as well which depict the inscriptions dedicated to Anekmalla who was the king of Nepal. He reigned in the 13th century. Four other short inscriptions are also present that are written in Devanagri and are quiet old to be deciphered.


Legend and Stories


As per the legend, the trident thrown by God Shiva to kill God Kama was stuck at this spot. The trident contains immense force and cannot be moved or deteriorated by any element. Although, this trident can be moved by a true devotee and this causes a tremor in it. The trident still exists and has not deteriorated since centuries.

The devotees can reach the temple by arriving at the nearest airport of Jolly Grant, Dehradun that is only 227kms away from the temple.

Railways

The temple is easily accessible from Rishikesh railway station that is 210kms away. The devotees can opt for buses and taxis to reach the temple.

Road

Frequent bus service is available till the temple from Dehradun, Rishikesh, Almora, Nainital and other towns or cities of the region.

Meaning -We worship the fragrant Lord Shiva, who has 3 eyes and who cultivates all beings. May He free me from death, for immortality, as even a cucumber is separated from its bond with the vine.
