Overview
The Bhuvaneswari Temple stands as a living example of exemplary beauty and uniqueness in sophisticated architecture and design. It is an example of an architecture that was practiced in Mysore during the reign of the kings. Therefore, it considered to be one of the milestones in the history of Mysore.
About The Temple
The Bhuvaneswari Temple with the Chola style gateway tower is located on the north side of the palace corresponding to the Varaha Swami Temple in the south with identical looking tower, providing an architectural symmetry to the campus layout. The temple is located close to the Balaram Jayaram Gateway.
This temple was built by Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar in the 1951. The principal deity Bhuvaneswari was carved by the famous sculptor Siddhalingaswamy of Mysore. Besides, the other sculptures of Surya, Maha Vishnu, Maheshwar, Rajarajeshwari, Ganapathy and Chamundeswari are also the works of the said famous sculptor.
The copper Surya Mandala, an important artefact in this temple, was transferred from the palace to this temple by the erstwhile maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar. This plate is offered special puja on Rathasapthami festival that falls in February - March every year.
