Arulmigu Vadivudai Amman temple

The Arulmigu Vadivudai Amman Temple is located in Thiruvotriyur and is dedicated to Goddess Shakthi. According to the great epics, this temple has been around since the time of the sage Valmiki. Stone inscriptions at this temple indicate that Thondaiman Chakravarthy renovated this temple about 1, 250 years ago. The temple is ancient - Which gives the name Aadhi Pureeswara to the presiding deity here. The Goddess has been praised by Appar in his poetry referring to her as Sri Vadivudai Mangai - After which she came to be known as Vadivannai. Many Rishis and Nayanmars have composed poetry about this temple and the deities here. Some say that the presiding deity is called Aadhi Pureeswara because Brahma worshipped the God here. Valmiki, Vyasa, Ramalinga and Pattinaththar have offered their worship here. The sage Agasthya saw a vision of Shiva as Kalyanasundarar here. Sundarar, one of the 63 Nayanmars made a vow to the deity under the makizham tree before setting off as his emissary of worship. Kambar wrote the Ramayana here. It seems that Kaliyamurthy Nayanar offered his own blood as oil to the "thiru vilakku" here. The 3 Nayanmars - Thirugnanasambhanda, Navukkarasa and Sundara - And Arunagirinatha have sung the praises of the deity here. Sri Thyagaraja has composed five songs in praise of Vadivudai Amman and Muthuswami Dikshidar has sung the "keerthana" "Aadhi pureeswara" here. The vaisvudai amman temple is the Thyagarajar - Vadivudai Amman Temple is dedicated to Sri Shiva as Thyagaraja Swami and Adipurishwarar, and Divine Mother Shakti as Vadivudai Amman.
