Overview

Arulmigu Velayutha Swamy Temple is situated at Ponmalai, Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Murugan (Subramaniya).

Legend and Stories

Ponmalai was once a dense forest covered with Sandal wood trees. Nearly 700 years ago, a Diwan in the Royal court of Mysore Maharaja suffered from some unknown disease in his legs. Despite getting treatment from a number of medical practitioners from several kingdoms, he couldn’t find a cure to his disease. One day the Divan is said to have had a dream where Lord Muruga had asked him to visit his abode at Velayuthaswamy Malai to get relief for his disease. The following day, the divan visited the temple as instructed by the god and met the temple priest (archagar) there. Despite sincere efforts from the temple priest to resolve his problem, nothing worked. Hence the divan got back to Mysore and explained the whole incident to the Maharaja of Mysore. The astonished Maharaja advised the Diwaan to build a temple for Lord Muruga temple on this hill. The hills were initially under the control of Puravipalayam Palayakkararkal but later the Mysore maharaja took control of this territory.
