Anjaneyar Temple

The Anjaneyar Temple is located in Suchindram and is dedicated to God Anjaneyar. It is also known as the Thanumalaya Perumal temple or Hanuman temple. Legend has it that God Shiva stayed here when Devi was punishing herself at Kanyakumari. This temple is situated between the Nagercoil and Kanyakumari main road, about 6 km southeast to Nagercoil's district capital and 13 km from Kanyakumari. The deity at this temple is about 18 ft tall and depicts the Viswaroopam. Dedicated to Sri Thanumalayan, the name of this shrine, Thanumalaya, is a combination of the Holy Trinity where Thanu represents Shiva, Mal represents Vishnu and Ayan represents Brahma. The entrance tower to this temple is visible from a distance as it rises majestically for 134 feet. The face of the tower is covered with sculptures and statues from Hindu mythology. There is a covered area in front of the main entrance and the entrance itself is about 24 feet high with a beautifully carved door. There is only one corridor running along the outer wall of the temple with many shrines and mandapams scattered in the inner area. This temple attracts both Vaishnavites and Saivites in large numbers. About 30 shrines to various deities within the temple complex, the large Lingam in the sanctum, the idol of Vishnu in the adjacent shrine and a large idol of Hanuman at the Eastern end of the Northern corridor represent almost all the deities of the Hindu pantheon. Hanuman Temple is dedicated to Sri Thanumalayan. The place dedicated to the Trinity is Shrine which is known as “Thanumalaya”. The name Thanumalaya is came from the combination of Thirumurties “Siva”, “Vishnu” and “Brahma” as. ‘Thanu’ represents Siva, ‘Mal’ represents Vishnu and ‘Ayan’ represents Brahman i.e. Siva, Vishnu and Brahman in “One Form”. Based on the ancient belief, top, middle and base of the “Linga” is represent as Sive, Vishnu and Brama respectively.

Meaning -We salute Lanka's horror, Anjana's brave son, who ended Sita's sorrows, the ruler of monkeys and the one who killed Aksha, Ravana's son.
