Agatheeswarar Temple

Overview


Agatheeswarar Temple is an ancient shrine situated at the Kolathur locality of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Kolathur is a suburban residential area of Chennai. The Agatheeshwara temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. Despite the temple being quite old, hardly a few people are aware of its presence in that locality.


About the Temple


Lord Shiva graces here as Lord Agastheeswarar. The Shiv Linga present in this temple is believed to have been originally installed by the great sage Agastya himself. The temple is relatively small in size but is quiet ancient. The Ganga Theatre is a famous landmark located opposite to this temple at Kolathur, Chennai. This temple doesn't have a Gopuram (tower). Instead, the idol of Agastya Rishi worshipping Shiv Linga is depicted in the place.

The main shrine has a small Linga of Lord Shiva. Goddess Akilandeswari graces her devotees here from a separate shrine. The shrines of the Lord and the Devi are found facing the direction east. The temple has no dwayastambam or bali peeth. A small statue of Nandi Deva is seen facing the Lord in front of the main shrine.

The temple has a small prakara (corridor) which houses the shrines of Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga graces here along with his divine consorts Devi Valli and Devasena. The wall surrounding the main shrine has the images of Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Lingodbhava, Brahma, Durga and Chandikeswarar.

Airport

Chennai is one of the major metros of India which is well connected by regular domestic as well as international flights from many destinations.


Railways

Chennai has two major railway stations Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore, which connects the city with rest of India.


Road

It is a bit difficult to find direct buses connecting Kolathur locality in Chennai. Hiring an auto rickshaw from the nearby Villivakkam area is a better option.

Meaning -We worship the fragrant Lord Shiva, who has 3 eyes and who cultivates all beings. May He free me from death, for immortality, as even a cucumber is separated from its bond with the vine.
