Aaduthurai Perumal Temple

The Aaduthurai Perumal Temple is located in Ullikadai and is dedicated to God Vishnu. This Perumal temple is said to have supreme powers. When the Devas came together and appealed to God Vishnu to kill Hiranyaksha, the God cut open the earth and killed the Asura. He reappeared with Lakshmi as Varaaha Moorthy (one of the ten avatars of Vishnu) at Sri Mushnam. Everyone came to the deity, seeking protection. Hence, the place was called, Koodalur (where people thronged together). This is also known as "Jagath Rakshagan", borrowing from the fact that God Vishnu protects the world. Here, the temple Utsavar is seen with a Chakra in his hand. The shrine was built by Rani Mangammal of Madurai. It is believed that Cauvery regained her glory on taking a holy dip at this Kshetra. The Moolavar Vigrahams were found in the village after a devotee called Dheekshidar of “Keezhvaluthur” saw them in his dream, by God’s Grace. The original vigrahams in the temple said to have been washed away in the floods from the Kollidam River. Queen Rani mangammal recovered the idols, installed and renovated the temple. Images of Queen Rani mangammal and her ministers are found carved on the pillars of the mandapam in the temple. The annual Brahmotsavam is during the Tamil month of Vaikasi. Once upon a time, all the Devas along with Nandhaga Rishi prayed for a dharshan to God Vishnu. Impressed with their Poojas, the God appeared before them and gave a splendid Dharshan. Everybody requested the God to kill the Asura Hiranyaaksha. Since all Devas of the heaven gathered (koodi means gather in Tamil) here, this holy was named as "Thirukkoodaloor". One other story says that River Cauvery displayed her grief to the God that all the impurity/sins was being washed at the river and that she was feeling that the river here was becoming impure and unclean. It is believed that Cauvery regained all her glory at this place. Since, River Cauvery is coming together in this Kshetram, this Kshetram is also called as "Sangama Kshetram", Sangamam means joining together.
