Overview


The Thirupullani Sri Kalyana Jagannatha Perumal Temple or Adi Jagganatha Perumal Temple is located at Ramanathapuram and is dedicated to God Vishnu. This temple boasts of being one of the 108 Divya Desams.


About The Temple


This temple besides its two famous names is also called Sarangathi Kshetram. According to legend which dates back to the time when Goddess Sita was abducted by rakshasa Ravana and was kept in Asoka Vatika. Brother of Ravana, Vibhishana tried hard to change Ravana’s mind. Ravana did not oblige to his requests and threw him out of his Kingdom. Vibhishina then left Sri Lanka and joined God Rama’s squad. God Rama then came to know what Ravana was doing. Because of this legend, this place was named Sarangathi Kshetram also.


About The Deity


The chief deity of this temple is God Shiva. He is named as Aadhi Jagannathar. His consorts are called as Kayanvalli and Padmasani


Legend and Stories


Over 72 Chatur Yogas ago, there were three sages Pullavar, Kannavar and Kalavar. They had come to this temple region and then covered themselves densely with the darba grass and merged themselves and started doing deep penance. God Vishnu was very happy with their worshipping and so he appeared in front of them. They were very happy. Sages wanted God to bless them in His original form. He obliged their request and was in the form of God Adi Jagannatha. From then, the place came to be known as Tirupullani. After a long time, Goddess Padmasani’s shrine was also built here. According to Hindu mythology, Emperor Dasaratha came to know about the mantra for child boon at this place only and he was blessed with God Rama and his brothers as his sons.


Festivals


The major festivals celebrated in this temple are: Brahmmotsavam, Rama Jayanti, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Krishna Jayanti, Pongal and Deepavali.


Prasad & offering


Devotees offer clothing to God Perumal with Tulsi garland. They also offer Thaayar with Sari. They perform abhishekam and other poojas. Many of the devotees also undertake feeding.


Significance


Most of the devotees come here and pray to get an offspring. Another strong belief is that all the sins will be washed away if devotees take bath in the Sethu Thirtham of the Temple. All the negative aspects that come from the nine planets will also go away if we pray properly here.
