Abirameswarar Temple

The Abirameswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in Tiruvamathur in Villupuram, in Tamil Nadu, India. Thiru Amathur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Vizhippuram District, Tamilnadu. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self manifested Linga. In the temple, Mother Muthambikai is seen standing, facing the West. There are shrines for Lords Mal Thuyar Theertha Vinayaka, Muruga, Nataraja, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Brahmma, Mother Durga, Lord Bikshadana, Sahasralingas, Lords Sattanathar, Kasi Viswanathar, Arunachaleswarar, Sri Rama, Sapthamadhas, Naalvar, 63 Nayanmars, Chandeswara, Bhairava and the Navagrahas the nine planets in the prakara here. A big size Nandi, Padala Nanddhi, Bali Peeta and the flag post welcome the devotee at the entrance. There are a few details related to the period of Koparakesari, Rajendra Chola I, Veera Rajendran and Kulothnga I. Legend has it that there was a time when cows did not have horns and were harassed by wild animals. Their prayer to Lord Shiva made the Lord bless them with horns to protect themselves. The cows were said to have made their prayer in this place. Hindu faith believes that all Gods including Lords Brahmma, Vishnu and Shiva, Mothers Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi and all Devas reside in the body of the cow. As cows are considered sacred and worshipped here, the place has additional reputation. Lord Abhirameswarar appears holding the feet of the cow on his head. Mangalasasanam Thirunavukkarasar, Thiru Gnana Sambandar, Sundarar Saint Arunagirinathar sung praising the glories of Lord Subramanya in this temple.Theertham Mathanga Theertham, Danda Theertham, Pampayaru, Ambalapoikai Sthalavruksham Vanni, Kondrai, Significance Sage Bhringi was turned out a Vanni tree at the curse of Goddess Parvati Worshipped by Lord Rama with Goddess Sita & Lakshman, Lord Subramanya, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Sage Narada, Sage Mathanga, Sage Vyasa, Sage Lomasa and Ashtavasukkal. Sannidhis Lord Nandikeshwara, Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramanya, Lingeswarar, 63 Nayanmars, Kalabhairava, Goshtamurtham Lord Dakshinamurthy, Sapthamathas, Lord Ganesha, Lord Rama, Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, Lord Brahma, Goddess Durga, Chandeswara, Lord Nataraja, Navagrahas,The legend has that initially there was no horn for the cows to protect themselves from their enemies. They approached Lord Nandikeshwara and appealed to him. Lord Nandikeshwara instructed Kamadhenu and the herds of cows to worship Lord Abirameswara on this sacred land and blessed with a sharp projection on their forehead to protect from their rivals. In this temple Lord Abirameswara worshipped in the form of a self manifested linga can be seen with a hoof mark on it.

Meaning -We worship the fragrant Lord Shiva, who has 3 eyes and who cultivates all beings. May He free me from death, for immortality, as even a cucumber is separated from its bond with the vine.
