2016 Kokila Vrat

Kokila Vrat is observed on Purnima during Ashadha. It be observed in those years when there is an intercalary Ashadha month, i.e., whenever Ashadha is leaped. Kokila Vrat should be observed during normal Masa and not during Adhik Masa. Kokila Vrat is dedicated to Goddess Sati and Lord Shiva. Kokila refers to the cuckoo and is associated with Goddess Sati. According to legend, Goddess Sati immolated herself when Her father insulted Lord Shiva. After that, Goddess Sati spent 1000 celestial years as a cuckoo before she got back her shape and merged with Lord Shiva. Kokila Vrat is mainly observed by women. In some regions, the Vrat is observed for a month from Ashadha Purnima to Shravan Purnima. During Kokila fasting, women wake up early and take bath in nearby river or water body. After bath women make an idol of a cuckoo with clay and worship it. It is believed that women who observe Kokila Vrat will be Akhand Saubhagyavati and will never be widowed.

2016 Purnima Fasting Days

Purnima Full Moon

Purnima fasting might be observed either on Purnima day or on one day before Purnima day i.e. on Chaturdashi day depending on starting time of Purnima Tithi on previous day.

Purnima fasting on Chaturdashi occurs only when Purnima starts during Madhyahna period on previous day. It is believed that if Chaturdashi prevails beyond Madhyahna then it pollutes Purnima Tithi and this Chaturdashi day should not be considered for Purnima fasting even if Purnima prevails during evening. There are no two opinions on this rule and DrikPanchang.com lists Purnima fasting days according to this rule.In North India full moon day is known as Purnima or Poornima. However in South India full moon day is known as Pournami or Pournima and fasting on this day is known as Pournami Vratam. Pournami Vratam is observed from sunrise to till sighting of the moon.

Pournami Fasting days might not be same for two locations. Hence one should set the location before noting down Pournami Vratam dates.
