What is the reason behind chanting Shaanti thrice

In Hinduism Shaanti, means “Peace”, it is an innate state of being. Wherein disturbances are created either by others or us. For instance, peace already exists in a place until someone makes noise.  Hence, peace motivates all our agitations. When agitations end, peace is logically experienced as it was already there. Somehow few manage to stay peaceful within even in the core of external agitations and troubles. To attain peace, we recite prayers. By reciting slokas, dilemma ends and peace is experienced internally, in spite of the external disturbances. Such prayers ends with chanting “Shaanti” thrice. It is understood that ‘Trivaram Satyam’- that which is said thrice comes true. Even in the court of law, individuals who take the stand as witness says, “I shall speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”.

All problems, sorrows and obstacles originated from three sources.

Aadhidaivika : The unexpected natural forces over which we have no control like earthquakes, floods and other natural calamity.

Aadhibhautika: The well-known factors around us like accidents, human acquaintances, pollution, crime etc.

Aadhyaatmika: We earnestly pray to the Lord that at least while we start special tasks and our day today’s tasks we shouldn’t face many problems or that, problems are reduced.

The righteousness of chanting Shaanti thrice is that where there is peace, there is happiness. Therefore, every one without exception desires peace in his/her life. To invoke the peace within us lets chant;

 oṃ pūrṇamadaḥ pūrṇamidam pūrṇāt pūrṇamudacyate

pūrṇasya pūrṇamādāya pūrṇamevāvaśiṣyate

oṃ śhaanti śhaanti śhaanti

Translation: Om! That is infinite (Brahman), and this (universe) is infinite.

The infinite proceeds from the infinite.

(Then) taking the infinitude of the infinite (universe),

It remains as the infinite (Brahman) alone.

Om! Peace! Peace! Peace!
