How did knowledge achieve the divine and sacred status in Hinduism

In today’s post let us see, why our regard for knowledge is sacred and divine.

According to Indians, knowledge is sacred and divine and that is why we don’t touch papers, books and people with the feet. Hence it must be given respect at all times. These days we separate subjects as sacred and secular. Whereas in ancient India every subject – spiritual or academic – was considered divine and was taught by the Guru’s in the Gurukala. Living being is regarded as the most beautiful, living breathing temple of the God! Thus touching another with the feet is similar to disrespecting the divine presence within him or her. That is why we offer an immediate apology with reverence and humility.

The custom of respecting all educational tools is a frequent reminder of the high position given to knowledge in Indian culture. From ancient days, this practice of deep respect for books and education is cultivated in us. This is the major reason why we worship books, instruments and vehicles once a year on Saraswathi pooja or Ayudha pooja day, which is dedicated to the Goddess of learning “Saraswathi”. Therefore our regard for knowledge is sacred and divine.
