Various kinds of oils are used for fueling the lamps during the worship of Gods. Each one provides the worshipper with a different benefit.

Generally speaking, Gingili oil is the most widely used fuel for lighting lamps during the worship of deities.

  1. It is widely believed that using Ghee to light lamps (Villaku) at home brings happiness and prosperity to the family.
  2. The use of Gingili oil (Nallenai) is said to relieve the family from all evils.
  3. Castor Oil is said to bring about fame.
  4. For earning the blessings of Goddess Durga (Amman) , one should pray by lighting lamps(Villaku) filled with a mixture of Ghee, castor oil and coconut oil.
  5. To get relieved from various Dhoshas (adversities) relating to the Navagrahas, it is recommended to light lamps with pure ghee (made from Cow’s milk).
  6. Lamps using Neem oil is supposed to boost and maintain good personal relationship between husband and wife.
  7. Using the mixture of Neem oil, Coconut oil and Ghee for lamps are said to bring inner peace and strength.

Oils and Deities

The prayers of a worshipper are meant to bring optimum benefit by using appropriate oils meant for each deity.

  1. For example, the use of Ghee in lamps is recommended for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi Devi and Lord Muruga.
  2. Gingili Oil is best suited for the worship of Lord Vishnu.
  3. Coconut oil for Lord Ganapathi.
  4. The use of ground-nut oil, mustard oil and palm oil is forbidden for the worship of deities.
