What is Mandalakala?

Mandala is a particular period or no. of days.

When is Mandala pooja at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple?

Mandala pooja is observed on the 11th and 12th day of Dhanu month. The mandala pooja falls on the last day of the 41 day period. The fasting begins 41 days before Mandala Puja i.e. on the first day of Vrishchikam Masam according to Malayalam Calendar. Mandala Puja and Makar Vilakku are the two most famous events at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple when the temple is kept open for devotees for most of the days.

A few Do’s and Don’ts during the Mandala kala.

  • Devotees should refrain from trimming their hair and nails.
  • The devotee should not feel proud when people prostrate before him, instead he should offer the same to Lord Ayyappa.
  • Devotees should not apply oil not take complete oil bath.
  • Devotees should not go near dead body, however if they happen to cross any they should not consume food before taking bath.
  • Devotees are asked to carry a tulsi leaf with him to prevent him from evil feeling and from Thitu.
  • Devotees should refrain from using mattress, pillow and umbrella instead they have to sleep on the floor and use a wooden plank to substitute the pillow.
