The Tennazhagar Temple is located in Kovilkulam and is dedicated to God Tennazhagar. This place is also known as Kovilkulam (temple tank) as there was a tank in the temple premises a few years ago. The temple was once known for its festivals but due to lack of proper governance not many festivals are celebrated. There are separate shrines in the front mandap for Sri Vishvaksenar, Nagar, Tirumangai Azhwar, Nammazhwar and Udayavar-Acharya Sri Ramanuja. According to legends Sage Markandeya a devout follower of God Maha Vishnu was on a pilgrimage to all Vishnu temples. On the way to Pothigai hills the God offered his darshan with Mothers Soundaravalli and Sundaravalli in response to the sage's prayer. There is another story that the God appeared in the dream of a devotee who longed to have a darshan of the God in the idol form. The God informed him about the idol in Kallazhagar temple near Madurai. The devotee brought the image here and placed it in the temple built.
