The Ekadashi that falls during the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of moon) in the Hindu month of ‘Shravana’ is celebrated as Shravan Putrada Ekadashi. This ekadashi is also known as ‘Pavitra Ekadashi’ and ‘Pavitropana Ekadashi’. In the Gregorian calendar the date falls between July and August. Ekadashi Fast is particularly auspicious for Vaishnavas, who are the followers of Vishnu.

General rules to be followed on Ekadashi

On this day, some people undertake strict fast while some even observe a partial fasting.

Consuming food that includes grains, pulses, rice, onion and non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited on Ekadashi.

The Vrata begins on ‘Dashami,’ and the observer must eat only ‘saatvik’ food. Complete celibacy is observed on Dashami night. Food consumption is strictly avoided between sunrise of Ekadasi day and the dawn of Dwadashi day. The fast is broken after the puja rituals and offering food to a respected Brahmin.

Lord Vishnu is venerated with complete devotion and enthusiasm. Idol of Vishnu is anointed with ‘Panchamrit’. The devotee offer flowers, fruits and other puja essentials to Lord. The observer of the Ekadashi keeps a night vigil by singing bhajans in praise of Lord Vishnu. The devotees visit temples of Lord Vishnu in the evening.

Benefits of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

The word ‘Putrada’ signifies ‘giver of sons’ and therefore it is believed that by observing the ekadashi fast in the month of Shravan, couple who wish for a male child, will be blessed with the same. Besides this boon, devotees observe the Shravan Putrada Ekadashi to cleanse their sins and attain salvation.
